Years of living in "cozy" NYC apartments shaped me as a person.
I became adaptable, creative, resourceful...and completely frustrated with the lack of space. For a few years, I had three little ones running around a tiny two bedroom!
So, moving to our fixer-upper in the burbs was an absolute dream.
We finally had (indoor AND outdoor) space to breathe!!!
We started with the oh-so-necessary gut renovation/restoration of our kitchen, which hadn't been touched since 1941. And, trust me, that's a blog for anther day.
Yet, one massively luxurious comfort was missing.
We sought the elusive MASTER SUITE!!! What a dream THAT would be! I knew when we bought our home that it could happen. I saw the potential to steal a large closet in our boys' room adjacent to the shower of a relatively large main bath. So, we saved and planned, and started the massive project.
We were able to utilize the closet space and the original standing shower to their maximum potential.
We used a kit, and built and stained a barn door for the bathroom so we didn't lose any precious square footage in the room.
The extreme bonus is that the barn door adds so much character, warmth and rustic charm. With lots of lighting and added ventilation, the new Master bathroom feels roomy, and functions perfectly.
We knew we'd need to replace lost closet space, so we utilized the incredible functionality of the IKEA Pax systems! I did tons of measuring, and concluded that our Hemnes dresser (with a few minor alterations) would fit snugly between two Pax units and under our central window.
It created some awesome clean lines and symmetry, and LOTS of much needed storage! In fact, it was more storage than we'd had in our master bedroom with the two very small closets.
We also knew we needed to save some coin with DIY projects. We painted and painted and painted. We installed cabinets, we installed lighting. I used our beloved Annie Sloan chalk paint to lovingly revitalize a headboard that my mother had upholstered years and years ago.
Many hours of work and quite a few bundles of dough later, we had the master suite of our dreams. It's deep. rich blue walls with bright white trim and accents of warm wood feel like heaven. The antique brass and gold touches add some elegance and sophistication. It has the feel of a high end boutique hotel, and we feel like it melds our feminine and masculine sensibilities perfectly.
I happened upon a boho rug with the perfect hues of the perfect palette to tie everything together, and I knew that for the small cost of a runner, I could add multitudes of color and life!
As with a high styled boutique hotel, we didn't need tons of space. But we did need adaptability, creativity, resourcefulness...and a bit of frustration... to realize that some wishes are attainable!
May all YOUR home dreams come true!
